The heart and soul of Alexandria's economic boon lies sprawled out before you in the form of innumerable smoke stacks, towers, warehouses and industrial yards where works of steam, iron and artifice and magical technology are primed and charged and sent forth into the public. There is a reason that Alexandria is known as the city of engineers and the city of airships and the great Industrial District would be one of them. Factories and the businesses that support them and technological industries ranging from airship design to mana-crystal mining to steam and clockworks abound here. Many of the buildings are large sprawling complexes and the clang of metal and the churning of gears or the hum of propellers is an ongoing affair. Dwarves, gnomes and goblins are a common sight here but the Alexandrian human worker, the symbol of the cities industrial era and spirit of craftmanship, is a steady sight.

 

And of course, Valeska Cynosura tends to frequent these quarters. The enterprising young Artefactual Engineer working on a grand project, organizing crews to finish construction of something massive. She's pointing about, as workers assemble a giant thirty meter-tall mechanical construction, the size of a good sized airship in fact. Only it appears to possess eight pincer-like steel legs. "I would prefer you stick to the schematics, given my distaste for failure through manufacturing defect." she lightly scolds one mechanic. "This is the prototype Octopedial Megalithic Reclaimator, and I think the council would prefer it function as intended!"

 

Aurala just happens to be moving through the area. Her mail is strapped to her back, her chainshirt pulled over her upper body. She is humming a bit as she walks along. She is looking around curiously, like she is exploring.

Sophia hmms, making her way out of one of the complexes, talking to a goblin foreman who has a rather large bandage on his arm. "Next time, make sure the equipment is /off/ before attempting to retrieve your pay for the week. Clear? Just come by the temple tomorrow and we'll take a look at that." Apparently the cleric makes work visits, as the goblin nods, slightly chastened, and then the healer starts making her way down the street.

 

Ceres steps out of one shop, so common among the area. A glance above has the elf grimacing a bit, as she takes care to breath in through her mouth, before looking about. Given a lack of unsual wrapped items, it would be easy to guess she'd not found what she was looking for - but no matter. After a brief shake, she starts into the busy street, to try another location.

 

Chiddle emerges from one of the factories in the area, his coinpurse heavy and the look on his face saying he's pleased with himself. Whatever sucess he's celebrating, he breaks out a fine imported cigar, and then lights the thing up, puffing away as he heads through the streets. Time to go spend that hard earned cash, after all.

 

The sound of a wall exploding outwards isn't that unusual in this area, though most buildings are reinforced to prevent such an occurance. The screams that follow are perhaps a /bit/ unusual, after all in this area experiments gone wrong are the norm. So when the initial outcry fails to diminish quickly, it's time to start looking closer into the situation.. which appears to be some sort of metal monster crawling its way down the street... Closer investigation reveals that it's some sort of Huge Orrery, but it's moving unnaturally, the arms holding planets and systems bending downwards to clank on the ground like spider legs.

 

Valeska was quite busy! Quite! She had no time for random explosions as workers look back. The points forward. "Up there, look out! I don't want you to drop that coal hopper!" she calls out, moving back to her piles of equipment following her on levitating platforms for a megaphone. She takes no notice at all of that metal monster. She was after all, building a larger metal monster!

 

Chiddle takes a moment to observe the thing, taking a long draw on the cigar, and shaking his head. "Please say it wasn't gnomes." he mutters, and then he sticks the cigar back into his muoth and starts out at a run towards the thing, luckily being short enough to weave through the fleeing legs.

 

Aurala frowns a bit and glances around. THe explosion draws her attention a little, but the screams get more of it. She blinks as she sees the thing and pulls her maul out. She shakes her head a bit, "Well..."

Sophia catches sight of the monstrosity, then mutters, "Gnomes..." under her breath, taking out her mace as she advances towards the thing, approaching cautiously.

 

Ceres looks up from her wanderings, to blink a bit. "A mechanical spider? No.. such things do not hold the heavens within their... legs?" And so, of course, with no further thought on the matter, the bard too goes to join the gawkers, though perhaps with more activity planned, as she checks her weapons.

 

A dwarf stumbles out of the building after his 'creation', "No! Stop!" He starts to follow the Orrery, "That's valuable! I've spent years building it for the Astrological Society!" The sun in the middle of the Orrery glows a bright yellow, and there's a ring of hovering stones about three feet from the sun. One of the rocks goes flying off away from the device, and strikes Valeska's construct right near the Artificer's head.

 

Chiddle laughs, "Not the Gnomes. Not even the Goblins. This is rich." he comments, and then takes his cigar out of his mouth to yell. "Where are the controlls?" to the Dwarf. "I'll try to shut it down without causing too much damage!" even as he says that, though, he flexes his hand and the mana-charged magicite crystals on his shoulder plate crackle and spark, as the artifice in his arm-mounted gauntlet-like device whirrs into life.

 

Valeska almost jumps as she grabs at the pith helmet on her head. "Wha--- Who threw that!?" she asks, turning suddenly. She pauses, eyes widening at the sight of some bizzare astronomical device apparently amok! She takes in a breath, looking rather upset at the damage to her precious giant spider. She rummages for some kit at her floating platform, gesturing for them to follow her as she moves forward, peering. "What is the meaning of this! There is delicate work going on here! I would really prefer you to stop your contraption, sir!" she declares to the dwarf, as the work crews stare.

Sophia looks up at Valeska, "I think the point right now is that he /can't/." She looks over at the dwarf, finally arriving, "Much as we wouldn't want your orrery destroyed, we really would prefer the industrial area isn't wrecked, either."

 

"Those orbs are really quite attractive. Do you think my mother would enjoy seeing such in her tower window?" Ceres asks one of those gathered, as she looks on.

 

The Dwarf seems ready to answer the question when another flying rock emerges from the 'Asteroid Belt' and clocks him in the head, knocking him to the ground stunned... but then again, he's probably used to seeing circling stars. The device continues down the road, oblivios of whatever it's putting it's thick legs down onto, but at least not walking into any more walls... A cart with scrap material is crushed, metal scattering.

 

Aurala cocks her head to the side a bit and does hesitate for a moment and then smiles a bit, "We will do what we can, but if left with no choice."

"If you cannot get this device under control sir..." Valeska frowns, always uneasy about forcably shutting down magnificent peices of technology. She rummages in her gear pile, pulling out a large tube of some sort, hefting it over a shoulder. She flicks at a few levers and knobs, starting up a boiler at the back of the odd tube. She keeps low for cover, frowning as she can't apparently see any other way to deactivate the murderous machine, except for judicial application of Steam Howitzer.

As people approach the Orrery, the legs suddenly shift, becoming more controlled. One lashes out towards Chiddle, showing an incredible reach as it slams down less than a foot from the Gnome.

Aurala gets a good grip on her maul and then urges forward and even though she takes a powerful blow by the swinging arm, she screams in fury and calls on her inner rage and almost seems to swell in size as her muscles bulge a bit and she drives the maul against the solid metal and lets out a resounding clang. It damages it, but not as much as some might think.

Eyes widen a bit as the others move into attack range, then shakes her head, "My hand is not so heavy..." she murmurs, then straightens up, with a sudden slight grin, as she recalls hearing a song at one of the orphanages. "The Itsy Bitsy Spider, went on a little stroll. Down came the wall, like a bell about to toll.."

Chiddle stops running when the thing pays attention and slams its foot down. He takes a step back, and then brings up his gauntletted arm to bear. There's a whip--crack of purplish energy jumping around the magicite, and then channels in the surface of the device glow as energy is transported down conduits to his clenched fist. A beam of hot red energy is fired from the end of the device with a very high pitched hum, that rakes across the surface of the thing, but fails to damage it much at all. "Taara's Blood." he curses, and then spits out his cigar and stomps on it. The magicite crystals are then projected from the surface of the arm-length device and emit a hiss as they vent a copious amount of steam.

 

<OOC> Valeska says, "Well, with little choice, Valeska's gotta fireball the thing. And hope Aurala stays back!"

 

GAME: Sophia casts prayer.

<OOC> Sophia says, "Everyone gets an extra +1 to attacks, damage, and saves. Orrery gets -1 to the same."

 

Sophia raises her mace, and chants a loud prayer to Althea, infusing her allies with confidence as she looks at the Orrery, "Foul mechanism, your rampage will stop HERE!"

 

Valeska kneels down, frowning with the utmost displeasure. She's going to have to damage this thing until it no longer presented a threat to her project! Other civilian lives it seems will come secondary. She levells her cannon, as steam pressure builds up. She depresses a release, and the whole mechanism recoils back, a white steam plume escaping as an explosive shell launches out of it's muzzle. And to think, such a device's original purpose was peaceful, in the speedy delivery of mail and parcels!

The fireball seems to make it 'angry' as the spiderlike Orrery tromps down the street towards Valeska, completely ignoring the Maul of Aurala slamming into it's side. The swining arm and planet fail to strike even close to the Rocket Artificer. There are some extra charring on the glowing sun from the fireball.

Aurala watches the thing move and then whips her maul at it. She moves after it, still swinging her maul and smacking it again. She might be leaving dents in it, each time one heard her maul slam into the metal.

The hits are definately causing dents, though nothing seems to be interfering with it's operation yet.

 

<OOC> Ceres says, "More singing."

 

Ceres shakes her head, almost frowning as it and the grin battle for supremacy, "Out came the 'venturers, and banged it all up....." she adds, as dents start to collect.

 

<OOC> Chiddle says, "I guess I'll scorching ray again. I don't think I have anythign else that actually can hurt it."

Chiddle fires off another laser beam at the thing, just barely clipping it and doing no damage. At least he sucks dramatically.

Sophia casts another prayer, and an azure quarterstaff of force appears by the orrery, whacking it with... well, a rather unimpressive ping.

Valeska tosses aside the steam cannon, moving forward quickly and grabbing one of her levitating platforms full of less than valuable scrap to ride forth, falling just off barely in time to avoid being crushed by a swinging arm and planet. She whips out her wrench however, flicking a switch to charge it's galvanic capacitor. "Get away! Away! That's my giant spider you're denting!" she calls out, flailing with the tool.

While the Orrery's arms and main body are quite solid metal, the globes are made of glass bound in metal bands.. including the glowing sun in the middle.

The Orrery follows up the various hits and blows with a wide sweeping arc on one of the smaller planets, catching Valeska fully in the chest, slamming her back several feet.

<OOC> Teena says, "You're using a Maul Right? You can reach... Higher AC to hit it."

Aurala moves forward and tries to smack her maul into that golden sun in the middle but misses the smaller target.

Chiddle frowns a bit, and decides to swith tactics. "Aim for the sun! Hit the weak point for massive damage!" he yells out to the rest of the group. Then the laser-projecting attachment folds away, replaced with a rotarry mana particle accumulator attachment. He takes aim and then in rapid succession three balls of glowing force are emitted from the spinning device, weaving around flailing legs to slam into the glass which does, indeed, crack. More steam is vented.

Ceres tilts her head as she finishes off her song, then brings her bow up, putting an arrow into place. "And now the itsy bitsy spider, will have to do without the sun....." as she lets the arrow loose, hitting the 'sun' solidly, though still it remains whole.

Sophia moves up closer, but doesn't engage the mechanism in melee. Instead, that's what the spiritual weapon is for. Of course, it sails wide of the globe, just barely, as the creature's jerky movements make it hard to draw a bead.

 

Well, this wasn't doing any good. But still! Valeska fell back down, grabbing at her howitzer again from the floor. She cranks up the pressure dial on the device, setting it beyond redline to maximum. She has one chance to prevent irreparable damage to her precious giant spider machine! "Everyone down! Firing, range set at first increment!" she stumbles to fall on her back, firing upwards at the sun-globe, a presumed power source. Her shell fires straight up, streaking into the core just as her device explodes, tossing her away into a pile of scrap laying in the corner. The concussion is thundering, but Valeska's too busy being barely conscious to notice.

 

The Glass of the sun shatters, releasing a wave of orange energy. The energy swirls around, and then the smaller globes at the end of each arm begin to glow as they absorb the energy. The Orrery itself has come to a halt, but the spheres are shaking violently, ready to tear off their arms. There are 2 larger planets nearly the size of a human, and 4 more that are big enough for Chiddle to fit inside.

 

<OOC> Teena says, "They don't actually move this turn.... Flat Footed."

<OOC> Teena says, "Aurala, you're up."

<OOC> Aurala says, "try to smash one of the larger planets."

<OOC> Teena says, "Okay folks, two choices.... Regular hit or glass. IN this case it's +2 AC to hit the Glass. But the Metal here isn't as thick as the body."

Aurala tooks a major hit near the start of the fighting but has been doing good. Except for the miss she has been doing good. She slams her maul one of the larger planets, denting the metal and putting some cracks in spheres.

 

<OOC> Chiddle says, "Will it be possible to catch more than one sphere with a 15' cone, without hitting allies or civilians?"

<OOC> Teena says, "Yes, you can get two of them."

<OOC> Chiddle will burning hands a pair of them, then.

Chiddle frowns as the glas orbs break through. Once again, he switches devices, the rotary cannon retracting and being replaced with a funnel like device. He takes out some kind of phial of black liquid with the other hand, and then attaches it to the shoulder plate. It bubbles as it's drained, and then a spray of sticky flames ours from the funnel all over a couple of the orbs, intense heat causing the metal to creak and glass to crack.

 

<OOC> Ceres says, "I'll shoot the bigg'un."

<OOC> Teena says, "The clear target or the one Aurala's attack?"

<OOC> Ceres says, "Clear. Aiming for glass."

<OOC> Teena says, "Shoot."

"What under... did anyone else expect that? Or know why such a thing occured?" Ceres asks as she aimes for the clear one, and shoots an arrow at it. It hits, but not very well.

He's designed the thing to use animation magic to rotate, and probably had secondary recievers in each of the globes so they'd spin when it was activated... minimal technology, maximum Magic... and in this case his control of the magic was... lacking.'

Sophia moves up behind Aurala, keeping a defensive posture as she manages to avoid the attention of the rampaging Orrery long enough to cast a healing spell on Aurala, helping her with some of her wounds. Then, her staff sails around and smashes another dent into the construct.

Cracks appear on several spheres before they manage to break free of their dead 'Mother Orrery'. The begin to spin rapidly and move accross the group with surprizing speed. The two larger ones strike at Aurala and Ceres, while the smaller ones charge at Sophia, Valeska and a couple at Chiddle.

But none of them connect against their target with any effect. In fact only chiddle's even connects with his armor at all.

Aurala avoids getting hit and as she swings her maul, she smashes the one that she was going for.

Ceres grrs a little bit, unusual for the bard, then sends another arrow through the air. This time, there's a solid *thunk*.

 

<OOC> Chiddle says, "I'm going to cast Magic Missile again, firing one at the most wounded one visible, two at the next most wounded."

GAME: Chiddle casts magic missile.

<OOC> Teena says, "Okay, nothing shatters, but getting cracked."

 

Chiddle switches back to the rotary mana pulse cannon, and braces his firing arm with his other hand. He fires off a hot at one of the orbs, cracking it further, and then another couple of shots at a second orb, chipping bits off the glass. The device on his arm is whirring pretty much constantly now.

<OOC> Sophia says, "Okay. Will move around towards Valeska, since she got beat on, and heal her. Defensively. Then command staff to HIT THE GLASS."

Valeska has connected.

Sophia tries to get up towards Valeska, moving to heal her, but doesn't manage to avoid the attention of threatening orrery bits long enough to cast the spell. The staff, meanwhile, makes another solid crack on the reinforced glass.

 

<OOC> Valeska says, "Valeska was out for 3 turns cold from the shell move"

 

There doesnt' seem to be much control to the spheres, but they seem quite directed at trying to buffet the group with their mad spinning. Nothing efficient, just alot of top action.

<OOC> Aurala says, "how far away is other big one?"

<OOC> Aurala says, "can I charge it into a flanking position with ceres?"

Aurala looks around after hers shatters and sees the other large one. She charges into a flanking position with the one against Ceres and slams her maul into it, shattering it as she sacrifices accuracy for power and deals a devastating blow.

 

<OOC> Ceres says, "Or rather, what's left up?"

<OOC> Teena says, "Two on Chiddle, one on Sophia and one after aurala."

<OOC> Ceres says, "Shoot the one on Aurala. Within PSB, I assume?"

Ceres wasn't expecting the quick assistance - changing her aim from one to another, the arrow goes wide. Hopefully that onlooker wasn't needing to keep that set of... mechanical flowers? Or something. "...oops."

<OOC> Chiddle says, "I'll take a 5' back and burning hands the two on me (I think)"

Chiddle takes another step back away form the orbs and then holds out his hand. The device encasing his arm spews another gout of flame at the animated objects, intense heat shattering one orb and cracking the other one.

<OOC> Sophia says, "Okay, will smack the one on me, and have the staff smack the glass."

Sophia finally unleashes her mace, taking a swing at the construct on her. The azure-glowing mace head shatters the glass orb, causing it to fall backwards to the ground. The force staff, meanwhile, soars nimbly over to the one attacking Chiddle, and smashes the glass orb on that one as well, spinning easily in the air after the blow.

 

<OOC> Teena says, "ANd no Valeska again, she's still dazed. Last Sphere charges Aurala"

The last sphere spinning, one of the smaller ones, actually manages to twist it's way accross the scrap filled street to slam into the side of the barbarian, though it's low mass keeps it from doing anything serious.

Aurala oofs a little as she gets slammed into and whips around slamming her maul into it.

Aurala blinks as it shatters and glances around a it for a mment, still in her rage.

 

Chiddle turns off the device on his arm then, which gives one final jet of steam, and then the magicite crystals retract back into their dormant state. Chiddle takes out a new cigar and lights it up, sighing a bit as he puffs on the smoke. "We should probably get out of here before someone blames us."

 

"Is it dead yet? Or would that be 'are they dead yet'?" Ceres asks, poking at one wreckage with the end of her bow.

 

The wreckage twitches, just to startle Ceres, then goes silent.

 

Aurala takes a deep breath and glances arouns, slipping her maul away as the rage fades and she looks a bit weak, "I think I need a drink." she says as she starts to move off.
