Solmnus is a mess. War tends to do that to a place, particularly when it is so centered on just one piece of - relatively speaking - small land such as that which the city occupies. What war also tends to do is breed chaos, and when a violent creature of any description is backed into a corner inevitably things take a turn for the worse.

In this instance, that creature is the Kinnevac's forces. Things are falling apart quickly for them, and they are running out of options with every passing second. At this point, any tactic seems a viable one and those smattering of forces that find themselves cut off from direct command often come up with plans that to any sane person would seem pointless or simply ludicrous.

One of these plans has appeared in the form of a hostage situation. Well within Myrrish boundries but close enough to a hostile and contested zone, a spacious home has been taken over by enemy soldiers. Normally this would hardly be a matter of concern, and a well-placed explosion would do the job. Unfortunately, the soldiers that have taken over the home have also taken prisoner a man of some importance. When the war is over, people will be required to rebuild and new faces to lead the way into the future will be just as important as every chunk of timber used to rebuild homes. This man is one of those people, a leader of the people and someone who will be needed to make the world of tomorrow a better place.

So it comes down to you. With the forces of the army stretched thin, competant and able-bodied heroes need to be recruited to perform jobs that the army cannot. You have been provided with a map, a description, and a name with which to go by and delivered to an alley not far from the enemy-held home. The rest is up to you.

Heldesteth looks at the map and description carefully. "Hostages... Better than nothing, I suppose. We better get to choppin' up some bitches, aye?" He looks at his partner for the mission, smiling in a way only a death priest on the job can smile. His scythe has been sharpened extra for the occasion. Hostage situations get him riled up and ready to kill. Threatening to kill an innocent to get what you want? That is a selfish. Death doing is pure and should not be tainted in such a way.

Tilly has very little to say. She walks along with Heldesteth, keeping an eye out for things. If she's riled up about hostages too, she doesn't show it. "Have they made any demands or is this just how circumstances have led to?"

Anyone has gotten close enough to try and talk to the soldiers inside has been met with a reply in arrows. Apparently they're not very good negotiators, these kidnappers.

"Eh, doesn't matter to me if they make demands. I don't negotiate in hostage situations. I simply kill the kidnappers." Heldesteth chuckles a little bit, wondering what such kidnappers would do if he charged at them, thinking he'd back down just cause someone might get hurt. "Though, I guess I should at least try to think about the non-combatant." He continues towards the house and pauses for a moment. "We got a plan?"

<OOC> Tillianne says, "What's the lay out? Is the building next to other buildings? Back door or side doors? Windows?"

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "The building is a decently sized, two floor affair with a basement. There's a decently-sized garden in the back along with patio of sorts and an entrance, and the houses on either side are a good twenty feet away at least. The thing is littered with windows, however, on all sides."

<OOC> Tillianne says, "Any cover between us and the house?"

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "There is an alley that splits the block, not very wide and mostly for caretakers and whatnot. It would run along the back fence of the garden, stretching off north and south. If you take that, it would be pretty covered on either side by high fences and walls."

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "All you'd need to do is jump the fence or get through the gate that connects the backyard to that alley."

Tilly looks to Heldesteth and explains her idea of hopping the fence. If he agrees, she heads on over to it, approaching the wall that is to the back door and thus avoiding the front gate. Nimble and in good shape, she is able to climb the fence relatively easily. It's not like he needs it, but she offers Heldesteth her hand to simply make it easier and faster for him. Once on the other side, she drops to a crouch.

Heldesteth nods in agreement and follows Tillianne over to the fence. Watching her get over, he keeps an eye out before starting to climb up, taking the woman's hand to do so more easily. He attempts to be as quiet as he can, though stealth is not his greatest attribute. He takes out his scythe once on the other side, nodding to the woman and making a 'let's do this' gesture.

Tillianne manages to stay in the shadows on her way up to the door but somewhere along the line she stepped into a bucket.

Heldesteth, meanwhile, is walking right up to the house on his tiptoes, making no noise, but managing to be right out in the open.

The sound in the garden prompts a response from those within the house. The sound of booted feet scrambling across stone floors echoes from within as the double doors that make up the entrance to the back of the house are flung open and out march - or jog hurriedly, perhaps - a trio of skittish-looking orcs. They don't appear as ragtag as many of their kin, however, as their armour and arms both look well-made and carefully looked after.

The one in the forefront spots Heldesteth, jabbing a clawed finger in his direction and growling something to his two partners that both rush forwards with their longswords leading the charge.

The wind blows, however, quite wildly in a freak gust and as the three orcs move away from the entrance the back doors slam shut in their wake. None of the three notice this, however.

Tilly thinks she's being all sneaking and stuff, but when the orc comes out she just stands up. "Oh fuck." She knows he sees her. No reason to be subtle anymore. She starts to draw her sword but the orc charges into her, piercing her breastplate and drawing blood. She grunts in pain but it pisses her off more than it hurts her. She kicks him in the balls with her boot and a second later his head is several feet away from his body. She simply decapitates him. Showing her bloody blade, she glares at the other orc. Yeah you -better- run!

GAME: Heldesteth rolls 2d6: (7): 7

The orc furthest away from the fight watches with a horrified stare as the head comes sailing in his direction, causing him to turn about rather quickly only to find the double doors behind him closed. With a howl he grabs at the handles and pulls, but to no avail; they've locked behind him.

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "Tilly, your turn again."

Heldesteth grunts as an orc cuts him good in the side. He then launches his hand out and touches the orc, channelling death energy in the touch. However, the touch does nothing to the orc, his life force too hardy to snuff out so easily. "Cursed orc. Gonna shred ya up!" He snarls, angry now.

No. It doesn't work that way. They picked this fight. She's going to finish it. She decapitated one, looks to the others in a 'you're next' glare, and then can't help but grin when she sees one actually lock his comrade outside. She doesn't wait. She charges forward, her sword held above her head in then slams down in an overhead swing. The blade goes vertically through his head, splits his neck open, and the blade continues to cut down and down until the orc is basically cut in half. Vertically. When her blade hits the ground and blood hits her face, Tilly pauses and stares ahead. Did she just do that?

<OOC> Heldesteth is gonna charge that orc :|

The only remaining orc just stares as his only other comrade is reduced into a pair of evenly-sliced pieces and a fine red mist in the air around the paladin. He wants no more of this, and with what can only be described as a terrified squeal it flings its sword away and makes a mad run for the fence; trying to escape.

<OOC> Tillianne will lay on hands herself, just in case, and then speak.

Heldesteth watches as the orc that hit him starts running towards the fence and growls. Son of a bitch isn't getting away! He charges after it and swings his scythe in a horizontal arc, cleaving the poor bastard in half and showering blood on himself. "Shouldn't have hit me, you jackass."

<OOC> Heldesteth will heal himself as well, if there is time.

GAME: Heldesteth rolls 1d8+2: (8)+2: 10

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "The house is dead silent now, and the backdoor is locked. You've already given yourselves away, so you could just smash it in and proceed carefully. Those 3 weren't the only orcs here, after all, and there's still the hostage."

Tilly places her hand on the wound she sustained. Her hand glows a soft golden and blood flow stops. She lets out a small sigh as she feels relief from the pain. And then she takes her sword and bangs on the door with the hilt. "I will accept an honorable surrender! Let the hostage go and I give you my word as a Paladin of Daeus I will not kill you!"

<OOC> Tillianne would like to try diplomacy for that.

<OOC> Tillianne says, "Can I get a circumstancial bonus or is it straight diplomacy?"

Heldesteth heals himself up a little bit and moves towards his partner. Seeing that she has managed to patch herself up, he saves his energy. Hearing her speak, he mumbles to himself, "I might though..."

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "Ah.. Sure, take a +2 on it."

GAME: Tillianne rolls diplomacy+2: (8)+10+2: 20

There is no response from the house, but no one is rushing out to meet either of you with their weapons drawn however. Either they didn't hear it, or they're in no mood to surrender.

Not expecting the creatures to give up the hostage, Heldesteth asks his deity for a blessing, granting Tillianne and himself greater skill in handing out his deity's work. The work of death dealing. "Well, that is our cue to kick it in."

GAME: Heldesteth casts Bless.

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "Roll a strength check to kick the doors down, police-style."

GAME: Tillianne rolls strength: (19)+3: 22

After Heldesteth has granted them a bit of a divine edge, Tilly readies her bloody sword in both hands and gives a mighty kick with her foot, aiming right below the lock on the door. SMASH! The door flies in on splintered hinges. Soon as her foot hits the ground she is already in a defensive stance, looking ready to dodge out of a firing squad of crossbows that might be aimed at the door.

<OOC> Heldesteth says, "or ladders, etc?"

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "You're in a sort of foyer, but it looks like you could walk straight through two doors on the same wall at opposite sides to get to the front of the house. Likely there'd be a grand staircase of some sort out there."

Heldesteth pauses for a moment and looks at Tillianne. He taps her on the shoulder and moves his head up slightly, eyes glancing at the ceiling. He opens his mouth, whispering, "Upstairs. Heard something." He moves into the house and pushes open the front door, peeking out and looking for a way to get to the upper level.

Heldesteth winces as a javelin springs into his shoulder from the hall way, setting off an unseen trap. "Fucker!" He rips the javelin out of his shoulder, angry now. "WHEN I GET UP THERE, SOMEONE IS GETTING A JAVELIN SHOVED

UP THERE ASS!" He roars and then touches himself with the last of his healing powers.

Tilly steps up to Held, looking concerned. "Are you alright?" she asks after he rips out the javelin. She watches him heal himself and then she sighs quietly. "I'll go," she says, putting a hand on his shoulder as she passes him. She then starts to resume her way down the hall.

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "Okay, if you're headed up the stairs you can try another search check if it so pleases."

You paged Tillianne with 'You can see a suspicious chunk of floor placed exactly where most would step coming up the stairs.'

Tilly comes to a sudden stop and slams her hand against the wall so her arm acts as a wall so Held doesn't accidently keep going and walk past her. "Stop," she says quietly. With her other hand she points with her sword towards a piece of the floor. "Do not step there." She will then carefully go around this part of the floor.

Heldesteth grunts slightly, nodding and following Tilly in her movement around that part. He still gots the javelin he pulled out of his arm in hand. He plans to make good on his word.

If anyone bothers to look upwards as they pass around the suspicious piece of floor, they will see the rather obvious hastily-rigged arrow trap hanging just overhead with a trio of arrows gleaming darkly. In the hallway ahead now, there are multiple doors leading off to either side but according to where Heldesteth heard the noises prior there ought to be someone or several someone's in the room at the far end.

Tillianne glances back to Heldesteth and points to the room he indicated while nodding once. She then creeps down the hallway as she makes her way to the door.

Tillianne probably steps on creeking wood.

The door at the end of the hall crashes open with a resounding bang, knocked clean off of its hinges as one orc shoulders into it and sends the plank flying out into the amply-sized hallway. At his back another orc appears, this one wielding a longbow however with an arrow already notched while the first orc stands defensively in the doorway with a battle-axe.

Tilly Oofs! when the arrow hits her in the shoulder. It knocks her back a step, but that is just one more step for her to use to pick up speed. Despite a wounded shoulder, she still uses her sword with both hands. She charges, screaming a battle cry as she shoots down the hall. Her blade lands and cleaves through the orc. More blood sprays on her. She turns to the bowman.

Heldesteth moves towards the orc with the bow, swinging the javelin like a mad man. Sadly, mad men rarely hit their target and the javelin is easily dodged by the orc wielding the bow.

GAME: Nin-galad rolls 1d20+2: (2)+2: 4

The orc with the longbow drops it as all of a sudden the fight is taking place directly at the end of his toes. Hurriedly, he wrenches a shortsword from a sheathe on his side as the bow hits the floor next to him and takes a made swing at Heldesteth but no to avail. All he manages to do is gouge out a piece of the doorframe.

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "Very dead."

The paladin is not done dealing out her patron's justice yet. After the orc falls, she turns to the remaining orc. When he stabs out at Heldesteth, Tillianne strikes out at his exposed arms, dismembering the orc's limbs when striking Held. She then cuts back with her sword and stabs the orc through the gut. She twists once and jerks up, then puts her foot to the bleeding out corpse and pulls on her sword to withdraw the blade.

As the orc falls in a bloodied heap to join its recently dead companion, the way into the room is revealed. It's a generously sized bedroom, but has been torn and ruined much in the tenure of the orcs. Stains and splatters mar most surfaces, and the windows have nearly all been barricaded in some fashion or another.

However, only one of those orcs remains. He stands at the opposite end of the room, as far away from the door as he can make it. In his grasp, the man you've been sent here to save looking as worse for wear as the rest of his house does. One big burly green arm is squeezed about the man's throat, holding him firmly while the other hand is dedicated to wielding a wicked-looking longsword, hold out and before the pair of them as Heldesteth and Tillianne appear in the doorway.

I'll make you the same offer. Let him go and I'll accept an honorable surrender. It is the only way you will leave alive." She has quite the presence when she speaks. "This is not worth dying for. Heldesteth charges after Tillianne, swinging at the orc as well. However, he misses the squirming orc and grunts in a fit of anger. Man, he is not with it today, it seems.

The weary man is tossed to the side by the orc's massive arm, of little more consequence to the orc than if he had just tossed a rag-doll aside. Wielding the cruel longsword in one hand, he leans in with his shoulder to shove the cleric back several paces before leaping after him. Two heavy feet hit the floor with a resounding thud as he brings his arm up and over in a devastating overhand chop. Unfortunately for Helde, the orc's aim is much better and he draws a massive and most certainly slice directly across Heldesteth's chest from his right shoulder to his left hip.

<OOC> Tillianne says, "Take it!"

<OOC> Nin-galad says, "And he's dead."

"Heldesteth!" Tillianne says when she sees her comrade go down. She swings her sword at the orc. "Bastaaaard!" And she guts him badly, spraying blood in a massive wound, but to her surprise he does not fall. She turns out to be pretty quick as she twists a little and raises her sword to parry the orc. When she catches him on her blade in a clash of sparks, she turns the weapon until the orc's is pointing towards the floor, and then backhands him across the face with her fist. Stunning him, she lifts her sword in an upswing and cuts him apart. No sooner does the orc fall that there is the clanging metal sound of Tilly dropping her sword as she rushes over to Held to try and stabilize him.

Thankfully, Heldesteth seems stable already when Tilly gets there. Heldesteth must truly be blessed (or cursed, in his own mind) by his deity to so quickly have managed to stop dying and bleeding out on the floor.

While all of this is going on, the man lays where he had been tossed by the burly orc. His clothes are tattered, and he himself shows the hallmarks of several days’ worth of abuse- his body is very nearly all black and blue, and his right arm is currently resting at a completely unnatural angle. A swelled face has temporarily marred his otherwise handsome countenance, and he's definitely missing a few teeth. He is, however, alive.

Tillianne cannot heal the man physically, but she does try to reassure him emotionally, as his capture obviously was a traumatic experience. Despite covered in blood, she offers him an encouraging smile, displaying confidence that he will be okay. She will assist him however she can in moving, but if Heldesteth cannot regain consciousness, she will just have to carry him back and the man will have to limp after her.

The man is not in much shape to walk, but he'll be able to manage. Anything is better than laying here at the moment, even if it means a painful and slow limp back to the nearest friendly station of soldiers for some much needed healing and recuperation.

Luckily for everyone involved, there was a patrol passing nearby when you eventually managed to hobble your way out the front door and down the street a ways. The patrol is perfectly capable of seeing the man gets to where he needs to be, and will take Heldesteth as well if Tillianne does not feel inclined to piggy-back him all the way to the infirmary.

Tillianne will see Held all the way back to make sure he gets proper treatment and she will stay at his side until he does.
