Gettys Falls! Thu Oct 08 Whirlpool

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At last, the Siege of Gettys is over.

After a month of laying siege to the fortress, choking off its supplies, destroying escape tunnels, and ensuring that the strategic fortress was truly well and cut off from any additional support, the actual assault began in the early morning hours, well before the sun had risen. - +bb

Under the orders of Prince Verin and the auspice of Colonel Strangeways, recently promoted to head of the Myrrish Sendorian Liberation Army's Corp of Artefactual Engineering, various parties of regular and irregular soldiers were landed inside the walls of Gettys through artifice-powered gliders. Their mission was said to be the first, but most vital, part of the arrangement. The magical wards guarding Gettys from artillery barrage had to be disabled. If that failed, then the siege would simply drag on until the food supplies of the soldiers inside were exhausted or another, new plan was put in place. Fortunately for our heroes, several of the tower-based generators were disabled through one means or another and the shields fell, enabling the assault to properly begin.

Airships engaged in combat over Gettys with the great, skeletal dragon that had seen to the fortress' protection in the first, prioper engagement of the siege. Many airships were lost in the battle against the creature with all hands on deck, but their deaths served a valiant and important purpose of keeping the creature from destroying the soldiers on the ground in the assault.

It became apparent, quickly, that all was not right, however. Rather than facing the well organized Hobgoblins, Orcs and other humanoids that they expected, they found only scatered resistance within the walls. More than enough to give the appearance of strategic depth, but not enough to do more than put up token resistance. It was then that the waves of trolls began to hit Myrrish and Alexnadrian forces. Unexpected and serving to slow down the assault considerably, the trolls were an unpleasent surprise for all involved and necessitated quite a bit of on the fly strategizing to defeat. Even now, after the battle, bonfires continue to burn as horrible creatures are being disposed of.

But that's not even close to the end of the story. Just as the courtyard of Gettys was beginning to be secured, there came new trouble. Earthquakes. Strong, powerful temblors that split the earth asunder for miles and miles around the fortress. Passes collapsed, the chasms in the earth opened and buildings in towns such as the one near the myrrish encampment collapsed. The damage was vast and extensive and that's not *all*. The earthquakes were clearly not of natural design. The battle over Gettys was paused when the central tower of the Keep *exploded*, a great vortex springing to life and pulling both friend and foe a like into its powerful sway. Great creatures of stone escaped from what appeared to be a great tear in the sky not unlike the one over the Felwood to the so-called 'Outlands'. It became clear a battle was being waged close to the vortex as flashes of magical energy were vislbe from the ground, but it was all most could do to hang on and survive the terrible earthquakes that were ripping the area around Gettys apart.

And then it was all over as suddenly as it had began. The vortex closed with a great flash of light, an explosion of searing magical energy. Things returned to their normal order, so to speak, but the damage had been done. Gettys itself was severely damaged as was the land. The passes into Sendor and the roads have been destroyed, grinding the army's advance to a halt even as its defeated Kinnevack's forces here. Getting past the damage is going to take a couple weeks at best, and that's not even getting into the trolls and so-called 'sons of the earth' or 'earth elemetnals' that have been unleashed into the world through Kinnevack's magic. Despite all this, Prince Verin, who is said to've been personally involved in the attack on the fortress, has called this a success even with the loss of life and has ordered a great banquet be prepared to honor both the heroes of the hour and the fallens sons of Myrrdion and Alexandria and their allies. There is quite a lot to do, even now, before the war enters its final phase.

The capital of Sendor awaits. -

((What this means: First, I want to thank everyone for their patience with Gettys. It took longer than I anticipated to get the plots done in the first place and at least one still has finalizing outstanding -- that said, I don't want to hang up the rest of you any longer and I want people to begin being able to RP about the results of Gettys. Based on what we know, we're able to discern a 'generalized' level of success without the details of the final undertaking just yet, though its impact will still be felt on the state of the Myrrish armies heading into the march. There will be a 2-3 week 'pause' in war RP as the Myrrish armies dig out of the rubble. I say this because I imagne all of you want a chance to do some different RP. The earthquakes unleashed by Kinnevack's magical attempt to destroy the armies on their way into Sendor has opened up the earth, revealing secrets long forgotten and lost that no adventurer worth their salt will want to miss. This is a chance for some old-fashioned dungeoneering, folks, and you're all welcome to take it. We will be. Once this is over, we'll be beginning the March on Sendor and will be working to draw the war storyline to its natural conclusion. Much excitement and adventure remains to be had! Lastly, over the next few days, we will be going over the 'war areas' and remodeling them to account for current state of affairs.))

Once again, a big thanks to everyone involved. To players for their patience and understanding, to my fellow DMs for their assistance, to Calamity for taking over one of the plots and running with it, to Mael for his continuing support, and to those who ran PRPs during this period. All of you are deeply, deeply appreciated. :))
